Chatz no. 1: Grace Bullen edition

A few weeks ago it dawned on me that I could talk to who ever I wanted to in the universe, under the guise of an interview.

Grace Bullen is one the coolest kidz out. She is the creative director of Your Friends House ("the most prosperous and culturally-ripe watering hole for young adults in the modern day"), as well as a writer for the site, a social media goddess and an all round babe. I decided to pick apart her brain cells as my first step in understanding what makes people tick / humanity / life.

So first off, who are you and what do you do?

My name is Grace Bullen. I'm a finance and journalism student, but have now found my home penning pieces in the cyber realm for YFH.

Sounds glamorous - so what's the run down on YFH - what does it want to be when it grows up?

The website has built our base and given us our presence, but the focus is now morphing to include producing creative work for clients. That's our moneymaker, I guess. It's great to see our creative agency expanding, but the crux of YFH will always be writing articles and interviews that hopefully people enjoy.
I envision YFH to be a bookmark of all educated, relevant young people, both locally and worldwide. I don't see the site becoming pretentious or exclusive, because it's important we remain relatable and grounded. I see the creative agency growing, so we can throw more events, book more clients, and help a lot more people creatively achieve their goals.

So definitely a name to watch. What kind of creatives does YFH have its eyes peeled for at the moment?

In terms of people working for us, we have writers, graphic designers, stylists, videographers and photographers all contributing to the site. In regards to the clients we work with, we can help pretty much any organization looking for a digital presence or creative help such as content creation. These clients range from clubs to theatre productions, as well as individuals such as djs, photographers and models.
Our two newest projects, YFH Sweethearts and YFH Cyber Babez, concentrate on providing a platform for talented models/artists and bloggers respectively. So we now also have that contributing to the melting pot!

Cool beans! Quite the undertaking but from what it looks like, you guys are killing it. You yourself also write for the site (I have an unhealthy compulsion to check for new articles about as often as I check Facebook) - what kind of stuff do you like to document in your pieces? / Do you have a particular style you're working towards at all?

Yeah definitely. I used to try and emanate this really dark, moody, emotive type of writing that was born from drug use or heavy emotions or something, but I don't think I'm headed that way any more. I'm so in love with Internet culture, so I usually try and angle my pieces towards popular culture, relevance, blogging, that type of thing. YFH Cyber babez was created with that mindset. I also control all the social media for YFH, so naturally I am in love with any digital platform. Ultimately, I'd like to write current pieces, but I want them to have depth and research and knowledge as well. I think there's an art in executing a witty, popular culture article, while still being relevant to current news affairs and deeper societal beliefs.

I'm so glad you check my articles! That means so much!

Oh I know exactly what you mean by your earlier style - I definitely had a phase of obsession with wanting to be one of those malnourished, drug abused girls with stringy long hair, wearing off-white shirts full of cigarette burns (that always appeared to be so darn attractive) - but then I decided I didn't want to be malnourished or drug abused or smell / I'm not a tumblr model.

Anyhow!

Tracking the way you are currently, where do you see yourself at this exact hour in time in a decade? Probably at work, because its 9.17am. Hopefully, however, I'll still be asleep because I'll be that far up in YFH/another company that I will have manipulated my working hours so I work at home or I work from midday onwards. I'm a heavy sleeper, and it's rather important to me.

Sounds like an excellent concept to me. How many hours would you spend using the Internet a day on average?

Oh a lot. If I'm not at uni or doing other work, I can literally sloth all day. After exams I've been known to wake up, not move out of bed, get my laptop from under the bed, and trawl all day. With my iPhone as well, I reckon about 5 plus hours minimum.

The Internet can be rather addictive. What are your top 5 websites? (Excluding YFH, Facebook, tumblr and YouTube)

Reddit, Twitter, Vice, Asos, Pirate Bay. I'm on these every day.

What one piece of clothing are you lusting after at the moment?

Miracle Eye's Psychedelic Pill Coat. It's fucking amazing, I love it so much. It represents everything I love right now.

Mmmmm candy coloured goodness. What tunes are currently on repeat in your ears these days?

…Then I've been listening to Classixx, new Disclosure and a couple other things. I'm so slack with my music these days though, I haven't downloaded a new track in too long.

Salem is the best. But if you had to choose between Mozart and Elvis?

Mozart for sure. He's my boy. Grew up playing classical violin, so I'm totally down with my baroque boys.

Gotta love dem baroque boiz. To finish on an easy question, from everything you have learnt and experienced in your lifetime thus far, what do you think the meaning of life is?

I think the meaning of life is to be happy with yourself, and just do you. This eliminates all insecurities, which are ultimately the stem of most of life's problems. It eliminates doubt, hate, worry and confusion. Obvs being happy with yourself is easier said than done, but it's a pretty simple and rewarding mindset once you decide upon it.
